Chile more than just a pepper

i have finally decided to break down and write a blog. mass emails are too impersonal and slightly annoying at times...so i am going to give this whole blogging thing a whirl.

im a 20 something making adventure whenever and wherever i can. spontaneous. uninhibited. silly and fairly intuitive at times. ive been traveling for a while across europe and finally have made it to south america. im a roll with the punches kind of girl all the way from houston, tx. i crave new experiences, new food, new wine but welcome the company of many- old friend or new face. im a daughter, a sister, a friend, an actor, a pilgrim, a woman, a dreamer, a doer, a couchsurfer, and sometimes philosopher. im finally learning that i really know nothing at all.

welcome to my blog.

as mentioned i am in santiago, chile right now. ive been here for about 3 weeks and ive got about a week to go. there is something about chile that has really made me feel... good. it is not at all what i expected. i mean i wasnt expecting to hop off the plane onto a runway of banana leaves or something, but chile really has impressed me. its much safer than what i think everyone i talked to about this trip was expecting. thats not to say i dont lock my door or watch my bag but i dont feel as if i am in a state of danger. except with the men, there are some beautiful men here! and being a gringa i do stick out a bit, but other than being stared at i have nothing negative to say.

santiago is budding and young i feel the energy on the streets. a history tragic and fragile. and yet i feel the strength of chile in every interaction with its people.

santiago is hard to characterize specifically because it is so large. each of its barrios or provinces feels slightly different. i am really taken by bellavista in particular. its not hard to see pablo neruda´s influence on the atmosphere. i find myself walking across the pio nono bridge a couple of times a week to take in the colors of bellavista.

im in a language program here and i really love my school. i could not have picked a better place, im challenged to use my spanish in every interaction, however, its an environment completely dedicated to the success of its students. after class i walk or take the metro to some to santiago´s best sites; parque forestal, cerro san cristobal or cerro santa lucia. there are many museums here as well the best of which is arte preclombiano--- dedicated to the works by the indigenous people of south and latin america. although, i have to say that as a person not usually easily shocked, even i reverted back to an awkward adolescence at the museum´s temporary exhibition on art and sexuality.

santiago wild and alive. i feel welcome and actually, right at home. what lies ahead? only the devil can say.
