Thanksgiving in Chile

giving thanks, such a thing... an action i should do every day. i have been a real life pilgrim. i have walked from france to beyond santiago, spain. and this year i am in santiago, chile celebrating this american holiday. it was beautiful. bohemian. something out of a sweet dream. there was a sort of magic about it beyond what i can express in words. a kind of satisfaction that comes when you realize that this moment is unlike any other in your life.

i walked into a house of strangers and when i finally left later that evening i was saying goodbye to what had become my family. i almost did not attend a thanksgiving celebration, but my friend, c, and i met up and she took me to a friend of a friends house for the evening. in the center of the room there was a make shift dining room table. a twin bed was being used as a bench, but there was music, wine, and a tiny kitchen full of many people working very hard. it is amazing that everything tasted so authentic considering that we were cooking with some very different ingredients down in chile. the food was delicious and the sentiment was more genuine than many thanksgivings i have had in america.

we ate turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, salad, veggies, pie... and we talked in spanish about this holiday. we shared our thanks with chileans, swedes, americans, and swiss... and then we danced and laughed and i caught my breath for the first time in ages.
